To pivot.. or not?

Scared to step away from a traditional academic pathway because you don’t know if you will be successful? You are not the first, and hopefully you will be part of the last standing, but rapidly waning group of people who think so.

It is indisputable that building upon a foundation in a degree, to a more advanced mode of study within the said degree, typically makes it easier to ace your courses, because of the knowledge you possess. Having said that, the world of work is rapidly evolving, in favour of dynamic movement and adaptability. Businesses are looking for professionals who can meld knowledge bases in different topics to maximise profits. We typically start out university quite young, with limited information about our capabilities and our interests. Naturally, over the years, we evolve, and so do our interests. Sometimes, right in the middle of academic study, we come to the sordid conclusion that we don’t enjoy what we are studying.. But we have come a long way and we don’t want to start from the ground up. Understandable.

Cue graduate study – the avenue for honing a solid interest or the springboard upon which we launch into an entirely or somewhat related career path. Still confused? Consider thinking about what you want to practise, with no limitations. Head to your chosen institution and have a look at the requirements, do you match up? That could be a start!
